BATT & BLOWN INSULATION
Batt insulation is still the most common, used, and widely available type of insulation in the construction industry today. It comes in the form of batts or rolls and consists of flexible fibers, most commonly of the fiberglass type but also available in other minerals fibers like rock and slag wool. There are some other batt insulation is made from natural fibers, such as cotton and sheep's wool.
Far and away the most commonly used product in the US today is fiberglass insulation and that is because of its availability, ease of installation, and cost to value effectiveness. Even with many alternatives in today’s market, there are not many places fiberglass batt insulation cannot be used with a good degree of effectiveness. Blown insulation has been used primarily in residential attics in the form of Cellulose or fiberglass. The ever-changing insulation industry has developed many different methods in which to apply blown material. Whether it be dry blown, add water or glue to adhere to walls or ceilings. ICS has the expertise and experience in the use and installation of all forms of batt insulation or blown insulation and will help recommend the right product for any application or your project.
RIGID BOARD INSULATION
Insulation boards or foam boards are rigid panels of insulation. They can be used to insulate almost any part of your building, from the roof down to the foundation. Foam board insulation provides good thermal resistance, and by using it as continuous insulation reduces heat conduction through structural elements, like steel studs by providing a thermal break. The most common types of rigid foam insulation boards are expanded polystyrene or EPS, a whiteboard that is lightweight, easy to cut, and with an R-value of approximately 4. Extruded polystyrene board insulation or XPS, a more durable, denser product than EPS board with a higher R-value of approximately 5 per inch. And lastly, polyisocyanurate or polyiso foam insulation board has an inert gas trapped in its cells creating a higher R-value than other foam boards of about 6.5. Polyiso insulation boards are covered with a foil facing to help reduce the loss of the trapped gas in the cell structure of the board. Each of the above foam board insulations has places and applications where they work best and ICS can help in selecting the best product for the most effective application.
SPRAY FOAM INSULATION
Spray Polyurethane Foam Insulation (SPF) is a quick expanding type of spray foam comprised of a two-component mixture composed of isocyanate and resin. The components are pumped at high pressure by a proportion-er and mix together at the spray gun when applied to the surface to be insulated. SPF comes in two different types of foam: open cell and closed cell. Open cell is a type of foam where the tiny cells are not completely closed, it is less expensive because it uses fewer chemicals. It is a very good air barrier but does not provide any type of water vapor barrier. Closed-cell foam insulation is a much more dense type of foam than open cell, having a smaller, more compact cell structure. It has a higher R-value than open-cell foam insulation and most other insulation products. It is also a very good air barrier as well as a water vapor barrier. ICS is well versed in the different applications where this product works well including flash and batt applications and non-vented attics for residential as well as sealing CMU walls from the inside of the building just to mention a couple of applications.
FIRESTOPPING
Firestopping is a fire protection system made of various components used to seal openings and joints in fire-resistance-rated wall and/or floor assemblies. Firestopping is designed to restore the fire-resistance ratings of wall and/or floor assemblies by impeding the spread of fire by filling the openings with fire-resistant materials. Unprotected openings in fire separations cancel out the fire-resistance ratings of the fire separations, allowing the spread of fire, usually past the limits of the fire safety plan of a building. ICS is an active member of FCIA (Firestop Contractors International Association), Hilti Accredited Firestop Specialty Contractor, STI Level 2 FIT contractor and working on our UL Qualified Firestop Contractor Program certification. We provide ongoing site and classroom training to ensure our Certified Firestop Installers are utilizing the newest firestop technologies and methods as well as maintaining safety standards by being OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour certified, aerial lift certified, and powder actuated gun certified.
JOINT SEALANT/EXPANSION JOINTS
Joint sealants are an essential part of today’s ever-growing commercial and residential construction industry. They can be utilized in an array of necessary and preventative applications. Just a few of these applications are life safety/fire compartmentalization, mechanical expansion joints, concrete slab control joints, energy conservation, waterproofing, and air control and leakage, pest prevention, hiding unsightly terminations, and property protection in general. ICS has the ability and expertise through years of experience to bring the necessary joint sealants required on your next project.
AIR BARRIERS/WATERPROOFING
Air barriers are systems of materials designed and constructed to control airflow between a conditioned space and an unconditioned space. The air barrier system is the primary air enclosure boundary that separates indoor (conditioned) air and outdoor (unconditioned) air. In multi-unit/townhouse/apartment construction the air barrier system also separates the conditioned air from any given unit and adjacent units. Air barrier systems also typically define the location of the pressure boundary of the building enclosure. Waterproofing systems of sheet material, fluid-applied or cementitious are used to keep the structure or object waterproof or water-resistant. These applications can be applied above or below grade and are critical to ensuring the envelope of the building is not compromised. ICS has the experience and knowledge in sheet applied, fluid applied, foam applied and sealant air barrier, and waterproofing products and applications. Building science has shown the importance of air barriers in protecting the integrity of the structure, providing energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and a more comfortable living/working space inside. Waterproofing is essential in the protection of many structures and must be installed by a knowledgeable and trained company.
